This is compost made last Autumn (October 2016) using the leaves collected and stored in the Autumn of 2015. This is our primary source of carbon (C).

It is mixed with grass clippings and hedge trimmings from the Autumn flush (September-October 2016). This is our primary source of Nitrogen (N).

Because the Autumn flush does not generate sufficient amounts of green material (N), we augment the Autumn compost by the addition of using chicken pellets to maintain our preferred 4:1 C/N ratio. We used four 20 KG bags of chicken pellets to make this heap.

This heap will be ready to spread in the Autumn of 2017 (early October) – a process that takes a whole year.
